Come on out to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the fifth annual morning 5K Run/Walk at Hernandez Elementary on 333 Stagecoach Trail in San Marcos! Wear your favorite Day of the Dead running costume!
The event features face painting for early arrivals; photos with event mascots, the legendary Catrina & her escort, Juanito; music by DJ Jesse Cruz/Jammin X-Press; door prizes and multiple chances to win unique trophy prizes. The community is invited to sponsor a memory board for display at the race in honor of a loved one who has passed, or place their name and photo on this year’s new Day of the Dead altar.
The late Mr. Rick Hernandez has been selected as the 2017 Día de los Muertos honoree & will be celebrated for his lifetime of service to the San Marcos community. Rick's son, Richard Hernandez Jr. will also be mentioned in remembrance. Richard Jr. lost his life when he was just 18 years old after being hit by a vehicle while he was out for a run.
All 5K proceeds are allocated to the Johnnie T. Rosales Memorial Scholarship, which has distributed annual scholarships of up to $10,000 since 2010 to selected San Marcos High School graduating seniors, and also the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, a local cultural center and museum.
